ALGERIA: New policy to curb violence at campuses
With violence rising on campuses in Algeria - including a spate of shocking murders - the Education Ministry and the National Council for Higher Education are preparing a charter to prevent acts of aggression within the university community. While the charter will be implemented at the start of the next academic year in October, violence is also happening on campuses in other Arab countries.
Arab states approved higher education action plan
The 22-member nations of the Arab League have approved higher education action plan for improving quality and promoting innovation as well as adopting an Arab year for science, technology, and inventions, each year celebrated in a different Arab Nation, according to Cairo declaration.

It urges Arab States to take action in the following: Access; Equity; Quality of Higher Education; External Efficiency; Societal Responsibility; Administration and Governance; Funding of Higher Education; Arab and International Cooperation; and Scientific Research, Innovation, and Development.

OIC Standing Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) has launched a Virtual Incubator for Science-based Businesses (VISB) for the Islamic World in abid to help OIC member states’ companies, research institutions and scientists to transfer their homegrown technologies to other OIC countries.

SOUTHERN AFRICA: Study identifies 20 higher education challenges
A study of higher education in 15 countries of the Southern African Development Community, SADC, has identified 20 leadership challenges facing the region, governments and institutions. They range from improved data collection, access, student success, staffing and funding to policy and planning, capacity, infrastructure, private provision and quality. The challenges identified, says a just-published report of the study, show the considerable amount of work needed to build a strong and sustainable higher education system across the region.
